The Russia Forum 2012: Cinema and Money

On 4 February 2012 a special event that had been organized through the combined efforts of Sberbank of Russia, Troika Dialog and Cinemotion Group took place at Digital October (6 Bersenevskaya Embankment, Moscow, Russia) as part of The Russia Forum 2012 (Moscow). For the first time, the Forum hosted a series of discussions and round tables dedicated to the current issues and trends of the Russian and international film and TV markets, as well as the specific nature of investments in movies, television and other media assets.

In 2011, Russia was ranked 6th in terms of box office results in global film distribution. It also became Europe's biggest market by number of web users. Latest projections showed that by 2014 Russia would enter the top 10 countries in terms of the biggest TV advertising market and TV content production.

The forum brought together for the first time various thought leaders and major players of movie, new media and TV industry, heads of media holdings, television channels, studio complexes, leading production companies, distributors, investment funds, banks, international legal and consulting agencies, relevant ministries and departments.

This Special Day of the Russia Forum 2012 was part of the program supporting socially significant projects, developed and carried out by Sberbank of Russia and Troika Dialog.

The discussion topics included:

  • What are the unavoidable changes in the industry in 2012, and the reasons for them?
  • How will new technologies affect film and TV content creation and distribution?
  • Is there any future for movie theatres and film distributors?
  • How to make money by investing in media assets? How can private investors finance movie production? Will specialised funds assist them?
  • Potential new changes in government support policy for film joint production and distribution in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan
  • Private-public partnership in film industry: what will be different in 2012?

The Special Day of The Russia Forum 2012 was attended by world leaders in media industry, including:

Sandra Stern, CEO, Lionsgate Television. Hollywood Reporter included her in its "Power 100: Women in Entertainment", along with Lady Gaga and Oprah Winfrey.
Lance Weiler, screenwriter, producer and entrepreneur. Business Week named him "one of the 20 people who changed the entertainment industry".
Caitlin Burns, editor and transmedia producer, Starlight Runner Entertainment. She has worked on a number of blockbusters including Pirates of the Caribbean, Tron Legacy, Avatar, etc.
