The 35th annual European Conference on Information Retrieval (ECIR 2013) took place on March 24-27 at Yandex and the Digital October center. ECIR is the main European forum dedicated to Information Retrieval. This was the first time such a high-profile conference in this research area has come to Russia.
The conference opened on Sunday 24 March at Yandex with a series of tutorials by senior researchers from Microsoft Research, UC Berkeley, University of Amsterdam and other companies and universities. Later in the day, our guests were welcomed to attend workshops held by speakers from LinkedIn and Rutgers University.
The main conference sessions were held on 25-27 March, and included more than a hundred presentations by researchers and experts from all over the world. Many speakers work at leading internet companies and research labs, such as Twitter, Yahoo! Labs, Microsoft Research, eBay, IBM Research and Yandex.
On the final day of the conference, leading data scientists and engineers from LinkedIn, Twitter, Microsoft Research/Bing, Bitly, Telefonica, Mail.Ru and Yandex came together at the Industry Day session to share their experience and give practice-oriented presentations.

The social part of the conference programme included a welcome reception at Yandex on 24 March, a poster reception at the Digital October centre on 25 March and on Tuesday 26 March a banquet will be held in the evening on a boat on the Moscow river.
ECIR 2013 is organised and hosted by Yandex in cooperation with the Higher School of Economics, with the support of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, Mail.Ru, Google, ABBYY, Yahoo! Labs and Microsoft Research.
