Authentic Leadership with Mark Rittenberg

June 27, 2013, 20:00 master class

On June 27 the Digital October Center hosted a master class featuring Mark Rittenberg, expert in the field of leadership, owner of a consulting company, developer of a unique program for increasing employee loyalty called “Brand Ambassador Projects,” and author of the original method he terms “Active communication.”

Mark is a proponent of the idea that expressive and engaging communication, based on the same principles that have helped great actors feel the moods of their audience, is capable of turning any company’s staff into a unified group, following their leader and sharing his vision.

During his speech Mark:

  • gave a talk about how elements of the performing arts assist in finding the leader within, while motivating one toward continual personal development
  • discussed the tools of creative communication that help bring people together around the idea of high standards and push them toward building an effective business
  • described how to achieve synergy between leaders and the people around them, creating an atmosphere of trust in the company
  • examined cases of companies with which he has worked
  • demonstrated several useful techniques that assist in the decision-making process for business, social, or personal tasks

For the last ten years he has been a regular professor at the University of California Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, one which is considered among the dozen (Financial Times) or five (Bloomberg) best business schools in the world. The EWMBA, for which Mark teaches, was recognized this year by Business Week as number one in North America.

His experience also includes providing consulting services for Egyptian, Jordanian, Israeli, and Palestinian leaders during a UNESCO conference aimed at resolving conflict in the Middle East; more than 20 years working as an entrepreneur, including work with European and South African companies; and many speeches on the topic of leadership for MBA programs around the US.

Facts about the lecturer:

  • His company includes such clients as AT&T, USPS, Bank of America, IBM, Sun Microsystems, HP, GAP, Levi's, Converse, Chevron, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and others.
  • Rittenberg has been applying acting techniques to conflict resolution and motivation since the end of the 1970s, when he was involved in the organization of a cultural exchange between Israeli and Palestinian students.
  • After the fall of apartheid he travelled to South Africa, helping the black population restore their lost confidence and self-respect using his active communication method.
